How to clean up years of duplicate photos

Ten-plus years of phones, laptops, and cloud accounts add up to more repeat photos than anyone plans for. A single weekend trip can leave the same shot sitting in four places: your camera roll, a friend's text message, your cloud backup, and an old phone you never wiped. None of those copies showed up because you did something wrong.
This isn't about running a scan and hitting delete. It's about understanding why the copies exist in the first place, so you can tell which ones are safe to remove right away and which ones deserve a second look before they go.
How a photo library fills up with copies
Most duplicate photos aren't accidents so much as side effects of normal phone habits.
Messaging apps are the biggest source. Several of them, including WhatsApp and Telegram, can be set to save every incoming photo straight into your camera roll, and on plenty of phones that option is already switched on. Send a photo to a group chat with six friends and, if their settings match yours, that one picture just became seven separate camera-roll copies scattered across seven phones, plus another lower-quality copy if anyone forwards it a second time.
Then there's the double-backup problem. If you back up to Google Photos or iCloud and also drag your camera roll onto a laptop by cable once a year "just in case," you now have two independent copies of everything, sitting in places that don't know about each other. Neither service is going to notice the other one exists.
Burst mode adds its own pile. A couple of seconds of burst shooting on an iPhone or a Pixel can produce dozens of nearly identical frames, and most people keep the whole burst rather than trimming it at the time. Multiply that across every birthday party and every dog that wouldn't sit still, and burst shots alone can account for a real share of a large library.
Edited copies build up quietly too. Cropping a photo in your phone's built-in editor or exporting a version for social media usually saves a new file next to the original instead of replacing it, so you end up keeping the source image and every edited pass you ever made.
And then there's the phone switch. Moving to a new device, people often do both the automatic cloud restore and a manual cable transfer "just to be safe," which imports the same years of photos twice, sometimes with file names and folder paths changed just enough that they don't look identical at a glance.
Two kinds of duplicate, and why the difference matters
Not every duplicate can be treated the same way, so it helps to sort what you're looking at before you delete anything.
Some duplicates are the identical file showing up twice: the same data, just copied into another folder or handed a new name along the way. Getting rid of one of those costs nothing, because what's left behind is a perfect match, down to the metadata.
Other duplicates only look the same. An export you made for printing at a photo kiosk might be downsized to fit their upload limit. A copy restored from an old backup might carry the original capture date and location, while a version synced later from a different device may have lost that detail somewhere along the way. Two files can show you the exact same picture and still not be worth the same amount to keep.
Once you know which kind of duplicate you're looking at, the only real decision left is which copy in that second group actually deserves to survive.
Quarantine before you delete anything
Whatever method you use, resist the urge to delete straight from a results screen. Move flagged files to a holding folder first, leave them there for a few days, and only delete once you've looked through the group with your own eyes.
The reason is that duplicate detection of any kind, including near-duplicate matching, is comparing pixels or bytes, not judging moments. A burst that reads as ten duplicates might contain the one frame where someone's eyes are actually open, and a score based on sharpness or exposure won't know that's the one you wanted. A buffer between "flagged" and "gone" catches that kind of mistake before it's permanent.
This is the same idea behind how Duplicate Photo Finder handles cleanup: it moves flagged photos into a review folder by default instead of deleting anything on the spot, so the quarantine step is already built in. The same discipline applies just as well if you're cleaning up by hand in Finder or File Explorer: move suspected duplicates into a folder named something obvious, like "review," before anything goes.
One more thing worth knowing: the Recycle Bin or Trash isn't the same as a review folder. On some setups, both empty automatically on a schedule you don't fully control, and there's a keyboard shortcut on both Windows and Mac that skips the bin and deletes for good, so it's worth knowing which keys you're pressing before you clear out a folder.
When resolutions differ, which copy to keep
The general rule: keep the largest, highest-resolution file in the group and let the smaller ones go. You can always shrink a photo down for a text message or a social post later. You can't add back detail a lower-resolution copy never had; no amount of upscaling recreates information that compression already threw away.
A couple of exceptions are worth knowing before you apply that rule blindly. If the smaller file is a cropped or edited version you made on purpose, the biggest file isn't automatically the right one to keep. That's a judgment call about which version of the photo you want long-term. And if the larger file came from an old backup with a broken or generic timestamp while the smaller one still has the correct capture date attached, you may want to preserve that date info even if you keep the bigger image.
Before deleting anything based on file size alone, check the actual pixel dimensions rather than just kilobytes or megabytes. A heavily compressed photo can have a small file size but the same resolution as the original, while a screenshot of a photo, taken instead of saving the file properly, will have a noticeably smaller resolution despite sometimes looking fine at a glance on a phone screen.
What your phone or computer might already do for you
Before reaching for any outside tool, it's worth checking what's already built in, since recent versions of the major photo apps have added some of this natively.
Google Photos has a duplicates view tucked into its library tools on recent versions, which scans your synced library for exact and near-exact matches and offers to merge them. Apple's Photos app on recent iOS and macOS versions has a similar Duplicates album under Utilities. Both are worth running first if your whole library already lives in one of those two ecosystems, since they work directly against the synced library instead of a folder you'd have to export first.
Windows doesn't have an equivalent library-wide photo duplicate finder built into File Explorer. Sorting by name or date can surface some obvious repeats, but it won't catch a resized or recompressed copy that looks the same but isn't the same file.
It's also fair to ask whether you need to do any of this at all. Storage is cheap, and a phone or cloud plan with a few thousand extra photos in it isn't going to slow anything down. The real cost of duplicates is usually search and browsing: scrolling past the same sunset four times when you're looking for the one good shot of it. If that doesn't bother you, leaving things alone is a perfectly reasonable choice.
Once the duplicates are handled, whatever's left is often still a pile of loose folders from every backup source you've ever used.
